Police Firearms Training Courses

The School Director is certified by the NRA Law
Enforcement Activities Division to teach the following courses:

Course Descriptions

Law Enforcement Handgun and Shotgun

This school is designed to teach officers how to be safe, effective, and timely in the use of their firearms. Students will learn how to use tactics such as, cover and concealment, how to safely perform room entries, the proper use of gross and fine motor skills, immediate action drills to correct firearm malfunctions, and to win a lethal encounter.  This is a basic Law Enforcement firearm course designed to provide you with the foundation of firearm usage during a combat situation.  The following equipment is necessary for this school:

  • Duty Handgun
  • 4 magazines for semi auto
  • 4 speed loaders for revolvers
  • Duty Shotgun
  • Duty Firearms Holster and Magazine Pouch
  • Duty Flashlight
  • Shotgun Sling
  • Equipment that you wear on patrol.
  • 400 rounds of duty or training handgun ammunition.
  • 50 rounds of duty or training shotgun ammunition.
  • Approved eye and ear protection.

Law Enforcement Precision (Scoped) Rifle Course

This school increases the abilities and knowledge of the law enforcement officer in regards to the operation of the long-range scoped rifle.  Classroom presentations covers long-range rifle marksmanship fundamentals, tactical rifle handling, rifle shooting positions, zeroing a scoped rifle, the tactical use of cover and concealment, ammunition and equipment, use of trajectory charts and rifle data books, range estimation, and reduced light training.  Range work includes zeroing, position work, precision single shots, rapid loading and firing, various support firing positions, multiple targets, angle firing, reduced light firing, firing from cover, handgun transition and threat identification.  Students execute a tactical course of fire and are responsible for acting as a team with fellow students through their course.  The following equipment is necessary for this school:

  • Duty-type, law enforcement optically sighted, bolt or semi-automatic rifle, caliber .223 or larger, equipped with a sling, and capable of holding at least four rounds within the rifle's integral or detachable box magazine. The rifle, ammunition, optical sight and shooter combination should be capable of consistently firing a five shot group not larger than one and one-half inches at 100 yards from a prone firing position.
  • The optical sight should be of the silhouette target-type, equipped with micrometer scale and turret-type elevation and windage adjustment knobs which can be turned with the fingers and have both tactile and audible click adjustments. Standard hunting-type optical sights, (coin or screwdriver adjustments), are not suitable for this school. A duplex-type reticle is recommended.
  • 400 rounds of duty or training rifle ammunition.
  • 100 rounds of duty or training handgun ammunition.
  • Bipod and/or sandbags.
  • Tripod mounted spotting scope and/or binoculars.
  • Cleaning equipment (rifles will be cleaned frequently during the school).
  • Waterproof ground cover or shooting mat.
  • Approved eye and ear protection.

Law Enforcement Patrol Rifle Course

This school centers on the patrol rifle for officers using iron sights or optics (which must be removed for zeroing exercises).  The classroom portion informs students of how to utilize fundamentals of rifle marksmanship and handling, how to zero iron-sighted rifles, and discusses zeroing policy and liability concerns.  Range work quickly moves from basic marksmanship to tactical movement, use of cover, various firing positions, pivots and turns, use of the safety circle concept, reloading under stress, firing on the move, multiple threats, decision-making, and reduced light threat identification and firing.  Students execute a tactical course of fire and are responsible for acting as a team with fellow students through their course.  The following equipment is necessary for this school:

  • Duty-type, law enforcement patrol rifle, (rifle or pistol caliber is acceptable), equipped with a sling.
  • At least three rifle magazines with a capacity of 20 rounds or more.
  • 500 rounds of duty or training rifle ammunition.
  • 200 rounds of duty or training handgun ammunition.
  • Waterproof ground cover for prone zeroing exercises.

Certificates are awarded to participants who successfully complete each course.

ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

The following equipment is REQUIRED and must be provided by the student for ALL Law Enforcement Firearms Courses:

Duty Handgun - A duty-type, law enforcement handgun.

Magazines or Speedloader - If using a semi-automatic pistol, bring a minimum of 4 magazines, (5 if the magazine capacity is less than 10).  If using a revolver, bring a minimum of 5 speed loaders.

Holster, Belt, and Ammunition Carrier Pouches - The holster must be department or agency issue, duty-type (patrol), strong-side directional draw, equipped with a handgun retention device and securely fastened to the gun belt. Speedloader and/or magazine pouches must also be equipped with a retention device.

Eye Protection, Ear Protection, and Baseball Style Cap - Safety glasses must be of the wrap around type or employ side panels. If wearing prescription glasses, they must be covered with safety glasses unless they meet the above requirements. Ear plugs or ear muffs (preferred), and a baseball cap with bill to deflect ejected brass must also be worn. NOTE: Students will NOT be allowed on the range without wraparound or side-panel safety glasses.

Appropriate Clothing - Students should bring appropriate clothing to participate in the range exercises consistent with prevailing weather conditions. Range exercises will be conducted in inclement weather unless a safety hazard exists.  NOTE: Shorts are NOT appropriate law enforcement range clothing.

Duty Flashlight - Law enforcement, hand-held, duty-type flashlight capable of one-handed operation.

Note-Taking Material - Pen, pencil, and paper to take notes with in the classroom and on the range. A jumbo permanent marker for use on the range.

Cleaning Equipment - Appropriate cleaning equipment for the firearm being utilized at the school. NOTE : There is no time allotted during the school for the cleaning of firearms. Students will be expected to perform cleaning of their respective firearms on their own time.

Knee and Elbow Pads - Knee and elbow pads are optional for kneeling and prone position shooting.
